During the months of June and July, EOC employees Dr. Volker Heydemann and Dave Rearick, along with summer education interns Kevan Landstrom and Kevin McGuire, visited local Cub Scout troops in Homer City and Marion Center. In all, over 250 scouts took part in a three day camp that focused on various aspects of science.
Heydemann and Rearick discussed the various properties of light and briefly touched on the electromagnetic spectrum. They were able to illustrate their points with color mixing using numerous colored flashlights, color filters, laser pointers, and diffraction glasses for each scout.
Education and Outreach interns Landstrom and McGuire discussed science in everyday life and stressed the importance of math and science, as well as careers in related fields. They also facilitated in the presentations on light and color and taught the students about ultraviolet energy using color changing beads, and infrared energy using heat sensitive paper.
The camp was enjoyed by all participants and proved to be a great opportunity to have students interacting and thinking about science at an early age.
