Pitt Engineering Career Access Program (PECAP)

PECAP Program

On July 19, 2007, nineteen students from the Pitt Engineering Career Access Program (PECAP), visited and toured the EOC. PECAP is an organization that serves underrepresented and economically disadvantaged students in the Schools of Engineering. Dave Ditto, Deputy Director of Program Operations, welcomed the students and discussed the facility. Education Coordinator, Patrick Huth discussed light, color, and the electro-magnetic spectrum with the students before leading them on a tour of the building.

The tour started with Kevin Cumblidge, who opened the infrared camera lab to the students and discussed and demonstrated the numerous uses for different cameras. In the night vision lab, Brian McIntyre had students looking through a night vision scope, while discussing its uses.

One of the EOC's robots was displayed by Michelle Sickenberger, who demonstrated and discussed robotics with the students.

After lunch, Ben Campbell gave students a tour of the multiple laser labs. Then, John Mazurowski and James Toney led students through the fiber-optics lab and demonstrated to students how they are able to splice fiber. Summer intern Lindsay Schwab discussed her summer project with the group, which entails examining cleaved end faces in preparation for a mechanical splice.

Once the tours of the labs were finished, Huth discussed careers in optics and engineering and fielded questions from the students.
