  • NASA student essay contest gives students the opportunity to control imaging aboard Cassini Spacecraft.
You have the opportunity to make a contribution to space exploration history! Your science team has the opportunity to compete for the privilege of deciding where to point the cameras onboard the Cassini spacecraft on June 10, 2008. http://saturn.jpl.nasa.gov/education/scientist/5th_edition/index.cfm

    View Introduction to Targets

    Video_scrren_grab

That day, the spacecraft will be approximately 793,000 kilometers (about 493,700 miles) away from Saturn's cloud tops, traveling toward Saturn at a speed of about six kilometers per second (approximately 13,400 miles per hour).

You'll have control of the spacecraft for 55 minutes, plenty of time to turn it as needed and point the cameras at pretty much any target you'd like.

The Science Planning Team studied all possible targets and cut the list to three images -- making your choice more manageable.

You are to weigh all the factors, and after choosing one of the three targets, explain the reasons for your choice in a 500-word essay. Your decision should be based on which image would yield the most scientific results. Just like actual scientists do, you are to explain what you hope to learn from the image you have selected. The artistic value of the image can be an added bonus to your decision.

The contest is open to all students in the U.S. between grades 5 and 12, working alone or in groups of up to four students. Deadline for submission is Noon, Pacific Daylight Time on May 8, 2008 (3:00 p.m. Eastern time). Visit the rules page for more information.

  • NASA Planetary Science Summer School

Applications are due May 1, 2008, for NASA's 20th Annual Planetary Science Summer School, which will hold two sessions this summer, July 21-25 and August 4-8, at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, Pasadena, California. Science and engineering recent PhDs, post-doctoral and doctoral students with a strong interest in careers in planetary exploration are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be U.S. citizens or resident aliens ("green card" holders) and must be living within the U.S. at the time of application.

The student teams will develop the equivalent of an early concept study responsive to a typical NASA Announcement of Opportunity for robotic missions, prepare a presentation for a proposal authorization review, present it to a review board, and receive feedback. At the end of the week, students will have a clearer understanding of the relationships among mission design, cost, and schedule, and the trade-offs necessary to stay within cost and schedule while preserving the opportunity to acquire high-quality science. They will also understand the lifecycle of a robotic space mission.

Partial financial support is available to a limited number of individuals to help defray the expense of travel and lodging only. Applications are to be submitted electronically by May 1, 2008. For further information and to fill out an application, visit http://pscischool.jpl.nasa.gov/. If you have questions, contact Ms. Anita M. Sohus, Jet Propulsion Laboratory, M/S 111-B29, 4800 Oak Grove Drive, Pasadena, CA 91109; phone 818-354-6613; e-mail Anita.M.Sohus@jpl.nasa.gov.

  • NASA Aeronautics Offers University Scholarships

WASHINGTON - NASA's Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate will accept applications from undergraduate and graduate students between Feb. 22 and Mar. 17, 2008, for its fall 2008 scholarship program. The purpose of this new scholarship program is to attract highly-motivated students to aeronautics and related fields. Undergraduates in their second year of study can earn up to $15,000 per year for two years, and graduate students can earn up to $35,000 per year for three years. Money can be used for tuition, room and board, and other school-related expenses. Students also can apply for optional summer internships at NASA research centers to earn an additional $10,000 in stipends.

Students who have not committed to a specific academic institution or program can apply, but if accepted into the scholarship program, they must be admitted into a suitable aeronautical engineering program or related field of study at an accredited U.S. university by the fall of 2008. All applicants must be U.S. citizens. NASA's Aeronautics Research Mission Directorate works to enhance the state of aeronautics for the nation, transform the U.S. air transportation system and develop the knowledge, tools and technologies to support future air and space vehicles. The directorate's focus is on cutting-edge, fundamental research in traditional aeronautical disciplines, as well as emerging fields with promising applications to aeronautics. For specific details about this scholarship program and to apply, visit http://www.asee.org/nasaasp
