Are you interested in optics, lasers, fiber-optics, and/or night vision? Find out about the promising, high-tech career field of Electro-Optics. Learn about the educational opportunities through the 2+2+2 Pennsylvania Integrated Workforce Program.
With seamless transition from high-school into college, this program offers the versatility of multiple entrance and exit points. After completion of each educational level, you can exit the program with various skill levels including certificates, an associate’s degree or a bachelor’s degree.
Participation in the summer camp does not guarantee acceptance into IUP’s 2+2+2 Electro-Optics Program.
"I really enjoyed all the activities the camp had to offer. I learned a lot from our trips to II-VI, Sabeus, the Penn State EO Center and Omni-tech. My future plans include attending IUP Northpointe for Electro-Optics for two years to obtain my Associate's degree. Then transfer to Penn State for electrical engineering."
- Joe Smail
"The summer camp never had a dull moment. I learned a lot of new things while having fun! My future plans are to attend IUP Northpointe for EO and Penn State for electrical engineering."
- Klaus Dieter Koster

Daily Themes Include:
Wave Optics
We say that light acts like waves, with peaks and crests like waves at the ocean. The distance from the peak of one wave to the next is called wavelength. See some cool photos!
Electronics
We use infrared (IR) transmitters and receivers every day, for television remotes, garage door openers, and night vision cameras. Well, maybe not the cameras. Are you interested in how they work?. See some cool photos!
Fiber Optics
What exactly is fiber optics, how does it work, and how is it made? Believe it or not, fiber optics cable is just very fine glass. See some cool photos!
Electro-Optics Center
The Penn State Electro-Optics Center is a research and development facility designed to help our soldiers see, communicate, and defend better. See some cool photos!
Nanotechnology
Some people feel building things one tiny, little particle at a time will have as big an impact on society as the industrial revolution and computers. What is the BIG deal? See some cool photos!
Forensics
The CSI television shows have really made forensics popular with students. Of course, electro-optics always helps find the criminal! See some cool photos!
Holograms
Every year Dr. Zhou has offered students the opportunity to make their own holograms, those weird 3-dimensional photographs. It takes high quality equipment and a very stable optical bench. See some cool photos!
NASA Video Conferencing
Imagine having a discussion with NASA personnel! They might show us cutting edge research from Mars, discuss the role of electro-optics in astronomy, or talk about current and future projects. One thing is certain: the pictures are out of this world! Here are some other photos you might see, all courtesy of NASA See some cool photos!
Robotics
In 2009 we will be offering a lesson in robotics at the Electro-Optics Summer Camp for the first time. Our program will model part of a course taught at the National Robotics Engineering Center, shown in the following photos. See some cool photos!
Demonstrations
The camp instructors always seem to find time to show students some amazing demonstrations. As you can see from the photos below, they will become your favorites, too. See some cool photos!
Tours
The best part of camp is visiting local companies and meeting their scientists and engineers. It is an amazing world out there, but you do not have to travel far from home to see opportunities in the field of electro-optics. See some cool photos!
Poster Presentations
Win big prizes for creating posters that will be displayed at dinner on Friday evening. You can choose any topic covered during camp. Some choices students have made in the past include night vision, fiber optics, and holograms. This year robotics might be a student favorite! See some cool photos!
