Internships

EOC Seeks Alliance Members to Participate in Internship Program

The Electro-Optics Center offers internship opportunities and seeks Electro-Optics Alliance members to do the same. Internships provide the students valuable applied learning experiences that complement their academic and career goals. They offer participating companies "surge capacity" to handle short term needs and the chance to evaluate potential new hires. Opportunities may be exploratory in nature, or they may offer advanced training.

Internships typically occur during the summer, but other arrangements can be made depending on the employer's need and the students availability. In addition, students often are available to work parttime during the academic year, which provides continuity with the work experience.

Students at all levels of education are eligible to participate in an internship - freshman through graduate student - depending upon the needs of the organization. The intern sponsor determines the qualifications and skills needed for each position.

As a part of the internship experience at the Electro Optics Center, each student is required to submit a poster representing their accomplishments. A poster provides a means for students to share what they have learned, results they have produced and the educational value of the work they have done. Posters are displayed at the Electro-Optics Center and at various outreach venues.

Internships provide a valuable opportunity for not only the student, but also for the industry sponsor. Participation in the EOC's program has led to the hiring of several of our former interns as full-time employees. If your company would like to sponsor internships, please contact .

Student Poster Specifications

All Electro-Optics Center-funded students are required to produce a poster that documents their work/research experience during their tenure at the EOC. In addition to documenting their work, the poster project will also provide preparation experience for future conferences and professional meeting poster sessions.

Poster topics should be discussed with supervisor. Supervisor will determine if sponsor approval is needed.

The posters will be displayed on easels during the annual EO Alliance meeting. They will be displayed in a booth adjacent to the EOC display at ARMTECH. If possible, students are asked to man their posters during the Alliance meeting break and during some portion of ARMTECH. Appropriate business attire is expected.

Suggestions

  • Poster size should be 24-in x 34-in. This will allow for internal printing and mounting. They can be oriented either horizontally or vertically.
  • Files should be saved as pdf to alleviate any platform/software problems.
  • The title of your poster should appear at the top in large letters. Poster titles should be easy to read. Your name, supervisor's name, division and date should also be included.
  • If poster highlights project work, the sponsor should be acknowledged. (Sponsor approval may be required.)
  • Try to use an easy-to-read font. The smallest text on your poster should be at least 18 point.
  • Studies show that text written in all capital letters is hard to follow; it is better to use bold print than all caps.
  • The flow of your poster should be from the top left to the bottom right.
  • Use pictures, diagrams, cartoons, figures, etc., rather than text wherever possible. Use of color in your graphics will enhance your poster.
  • Your poster should be arranged logically and cover the key points of your work. It shouldn't include all the details; you can describe them to people who are interested. Please keep the audience in mind and compose at an appropriate technical level.
  • The ideal poster is designed to attract attention, provide a brief overview of your work, and initiate discussion.
  • Make your poster as self-explanatory as possible. This will save your efforts for technical discussions.
  • You may wish to prepare a short presentation of about 5 or 10 minutes that you can periodically give to those assembled around your poster.
